IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER (IDD) DETERMINANTS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN AT LOW LAND AND UP LAND PAGAR ALAM CITY, SOUTH SUMATERA PROVINCE

Rusnelly
Background: Iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is still one of the public health nutrition problems in Indonesia. National IDD survey in 2003, showed that some lowland area were also included as endemic goiter area. IDD evaluation project by local Department of Health, using TGR (Total Goiter Rate) on schoolchildren, showed that lowland area of Pagar Alam city was a severe endemic area (TGR= 38%). This study aimed to find determinants of IDD on preschool children in Pagar Alam city and the determinants of IDD on preschool children, who lived in upland and lowland area in Pagar Alam city.
Methods: The subjects of this cross sectional study, were 72 schoolchildren from grade 5 and 6 of the elementary schools in Pagar Alam city. IDD prevalence was measured with palpation method and UIE (Urine Excreted Iodine). IDD determinants among the schoolchildren in Pagar Alam city were analysed by linier regression method for UIE as the dependent variables and by logistic regression for goiter as the dependent variables. The difference between the prevalence and determinants of IDD in lowland and upland area was analysed by Mann Whitney and independent t-test.
